Upstream is described as "invaluable", "excellent" and "the best publication of its type on the market" by senior managers in some of the most respected companies in the industry. Upstream has firmly established itself as the leading source of quality news in the international oil and gas industry.

Other respected publications have also taken notice, with the Los Angeles Times stating: "The flamboyant trade weekly Upstream has become a must-read both for its bold irreverent style and its thorough coverage." This was followed by praise from the New York Times: "For energy executives, Upstream has become a must-read, like Advertising Age or Variety or American Lawyer in their respective fields."

In order to maintain the paper's leading position and strong reputation, it is important to listen to the market. Every two years, Upstream carries out a comprehensive readership survey through Ipsos MORI, the renowned UK research organisation.

The latest survey, conducted by telephone in 2010 among 201 subscribers, shows that 95% rate Upstream as very good or fairly good, with subscribers reading 6.8 out of every 8 issues on average, and with each issue being circulated amongst an average of 4.8 people.

Furthermore, it is clearly a publication favoured by management, with the majority in management functions (25% classing themselves as top management) and 75%influencing the strategic development of their company.

Despite their senior ranking, Upstream's subscribers value the publication so highly that they spend an average of 43 minutes per week reading the newspaper.
