The Tulsa-based explorer reported late on Tuesday that a discovery well probing the Niobrara shale formation produced at an initial maximum rate of 16 million cubic feet per day at a flowing pressure of 7300 pounds per square inch.

WPX has since "substantially" choked back the well, and it settled to a 30-day production average of 12 MMcfpd.

The well was drilled in Garfield County, Colorado, to a vertical depth of 10,200 feet with a 4600-foot horizontal and 17 frac stages.
