The basin was expected to produce 7.27 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas in November, according to the latest estimates from the US Energy Information Administration, second only to the 18.17 Bcfd projected from the Marcellus shale.

While operators historically targeted deep gas plays in the Permian, especially in the Delaware sub-basin, future gas growth will come from oil wells, where gas cuts can make up anywhere from 20% to more than 60% of the total hydrocarbons produced from plays such as the Wolfcamp shale.
