Canadian Natural Resources (CNR) has become the first oil sands mining operator to submit a tailings management plan to the Alberta government under strict new rules aimed at reclaiming and eliminating tailings ponds from western Canada’s landscape.
What has long been a blight on the industry could soon become its redemption in the eyes of the public if companies can turn the ponds — filled with mature fine tailings and clay from bitumen extraction — back into the natural habitats they once were.
