In 2010 Suncor’s first tailings pond was officially deemed reclaimed by the Alberta government when it opened Wapisiw Lookout near its site in the Athabasca oil sands region.
The company has since made another pond trafficable through the use of coke capping technology. Under the new provincial regulatory requirements of Directive 085, Suncor is in the midst of adding treatment capacity by converting a pond to an in-mine dedicated disposal area for its tailings operation.
