In a pivotal moment for the UK domestic shale gas industry, the government in October overruled a local council in north-west England to allow privately-owned Cuadrilla Resources to resume hydraulic fracturing operations.

The work is to be being carried out in a county not far from where scientists believe the company’s last attempt to explore unconventional resources led to earthquakes.

Cuadrilla said it is “confident it can conduct safe and responsible” operations in Lancashire, where it has received approval to drill, frack and test up to four exploration wells.
