Until this year, design codes and the US Bureau of Safety & Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) have required a prescriptive approach for underwater inspections of offshore platforms.
The prescriptive method focuses on understanding the consequences of failure. Conversely, a risk-based approach understands the consequences but also considers the probability of failure.
Justin Bucknell says this gives operators a better picture of risks associated with their offshore assets.
