The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) and the Western Energy Alliance (WEA) filed a lawsuit to challenge rules finalised by the DoI designed to curb flaring and venting of natural gas, arguing that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) does not have regulatory authority over air quality.

“BLM lacks statutory authority for the creation of an air quality regulatory programme, which has resided with the Environmental Protection Agency and the states since the 1970s,” said WEA vice president of government and public affairs Kathleen Sgamma.
