The touted contract, which some sources put at $7 billion, was for the construction and time charter of nine carriers, with the provision that three of the vessels would be built in India.
Cancelling the tender process would hit already-struggling yards including the local Cochin Shipyard, which had a memorandum of understanding with South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries to vie for the contract.
