India has a thriving onshore exploration and production industry, which is today dominated by state-owned players, though the government would like to attract more private sector and international participation.

Most of these onshore operations are small, with output supplied to local customers, although future exploration success could come on the scale of Cairn India’s (Vedanta Resources) oilfields in Rajasthan.

In October, government officials inaugurated the national seismic programme (NSP) that is intended as a fresh appraisal of all India’s sedimentary basins, in particular in areas where there are no or little data available.
