India’s Petroleum & Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan confirmed the government plan, without elaborating much on the timeline for achieving the target.

“At present gas is 6.5% in our energy basket. We have planned a 15% (share),” Pradhan said in September when launching the ‘Gas4India’ campaign, which is aimed at increasing the role of natural gas in the country.

India’s domestic gas production dipped marginally to about 85 million cubic metres per day during the previous fiscal year and is unlikely to increase significantly until at least 2019, when Oil & Natural Gas Corporation’s KG-DWN-98/2 asset is scheduled to start production.
