The overall rig count increased by 20 to 588 in all as offshore drillers added two rigs and one rig was added to inland waters, with 19 of the 20 rigs targeting oil.
More than half of all the additional rigs have gone into the red-hot Permian basin, where operators are adding to their development drilling programmes in the Midland sub-basin and proving up new areas in the emerging Delaware sub-basin.
