“I was an academic for seven years after my PhD and focused on Greece, Morocco and the Indian Ocean,” he said.

Bassias graduated with a degree in geology from Athens University before heading to Paris to secure an MSc in stratigraphy and a geology PhD.

He headed to Germany for a year to help pull together a geological atlas of Morocco before returning to Paris to secure business-related qualifications and a four-year stint as associate professor at the National Museum of Natural History.
