A coalition of Native American tribes submitted a proposal to the government to create a new national monument covering about 1.9 million acres in the area, saying the land holds special cultural significance for tribal members.
The tribes have garnered significant support from environmental groups, and those in the outdoor recreation industry and the coalition met officials from the administration of US President Barack Obama earlier this year to push for the designation.
