Pioneer had sought to classify all the wells on its Ridley 01 Unit in the Sugarkane field in Karnes County as gas wells, citing the need to ease its “administrative burden”. Four of the 11 wells on the unit were already classified as gas wells.
Texas state law gives a tax benefit to operators for high-cost gas wells. Commission staff had recommended denying the request because condensate production is not considered when classifying wells.
