Although undrilled, the area has the potential to host western extensions of the prolific Nile Delta gas trend and, in the Herodotus basin, the new carbonate play established by Eni’s 30-trillion cubic foot Zohr discovery.
It appears to also house a northerly extension of the proven onshore Western Desert play into the narrow continental shelf and the Matruh Canyon area.
In addition, to the north-west is the little known Herodotus fold-belt play.
