Emissions from the rear ends of cattle in the US’ biggest milk-producing state are said to be responsible for about a quarter of California’s annual greenhouse emissions.

Oil and gas extraction contributes just 4% of the total, while pipelines contribute another 9%.

Legislation signed into law this year aims to slash bovine emissions to 40% of 2013 levels with rules that will take effect in 2024.
