The proposal that ExxonMobil chief executive Rex Tillerson lead US foreign policy would have been considered outlandish 12 months ago.

However, Tillerson has seen off a host of contenders for this plum post. He still has to get through a Senate confirmation hearing in January — if all the Democrats vote against Tillerson, it will only take three Republicans to sink him — and Republican Senators John McCain, Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham have all voiced their concerns about Tillerson’s links with Russia.
