It includes Anglo-Dutch supermajor Shell, French giant Total and Italy’s Eni but not UK supermajor BP, which pulled out because of potential sanctions difficulties involving the US.

It is unclear if the list of 29 companies may be expanded in future. It is also not known which companies, if any, have been eliminated.

BP had made preliminary preparations for possible involvement in Iran by creating a new executive committee to explore potential business in the country without involving chief executive Bob Dudley, who is a US citizen subject to continuing US anti-Iran sanctions.

After
