Potential buyers are set to submit bids next month for the huge natural gas position held by US oil company ConocoPhillips in the San Juan basin in New Mexico.
Industry sources predict the package could raise as much as $2.9 billion for the seller and attract bids from the likes of UK supermajor BP, which has a large nearby position, as well as from major private equity investors.
