The five-year ban introduced by the Canadian federal government in December on future oil and gas development in the Arctic was a surprise to industry, but was not interpreted as a blanket ban on activity.
Majors including Imperial Oil and ConocoPhillips — and a host of smaller companies — currently hold exploration licenses set to expire beginning in 2019 until 2023.
