Labour’s programme committee has proposed supporting oil-industry calls for an impact assessment study of the southernmost of the three northern ocean tracts that are currently closed for oil drilling, known as Nordland 6, while keeping the other two areas off limits also for the next parliamentary period.

“We continue Labour’s long tradition of gradual, careful and knowledge-based progress.

“This is all about exploiting the oil and gas resources to the benefit of society, industry and jobs in a manner that does not come into conflict with fisheries, tourism and environment interests,” Labour leader and prime ministerial candidate Jonas Gahr Store said on the party’s website on Monday.
