Iran’s Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, who died over the weekend at the age of 82, was always at the forefront of moves to improve relations with foreign countries, especially with the US.

Rafsanjani was also intent on restoring Iran’s traditional position as a leading oil producer and exporter.

When he became president of the country about a quarter century ago, one of his first foreign policy moves was to send a message of welcome to leading US oil companies in Houston.
