Alberta’s Duvernay shale formation is being touted as one of the top five best plays in North America, with potential for significant production growth, and recent estimates putting its total in-place resource among the biggest in Western Canada.

In its latest Duvernay reserves and resources report released at the end of 2016, the Alberta Energy Regulator — along with information from the Alberta Geological Society — estimated the play’s total in-place resource to contain between 350 trillion and 540 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, 7 billion to 16 billion barrels of natural gas liquids, and 44 billion to 81 billion barrels of oil.
