There are some thorny issues facing Venezuela and the US as the two countries prepare for a new chapter in relations with the incoming administration of US President-elect Donald Trump, writes Gareth Chetwynd.

In the diplomatic field, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has initially aligned himself with the “open for business” camp, along with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

Maduro held out an olive branch for restoring diplomatic relations by describing a “brutal hate campaign” against Trump on the part of the international media.
