The Australian commodities giant revealed that the Burrokeet-2 well on Block 23A off the north-east coast of the island of Tobago hit “non-commercial hydrocarbons” after drilling to a total depth of 7348 metres.

The well was drilled by the Transocean drillship Deepwater Invictus in 1923 metres of water, targeting Paleogene reservoirs.

BHP Billiton was forced to scrap the Burrokeet-1 well in August after experiencing “mechanical difficulties” at a total depth of around 3300 metres.
