Though its overall safety figures look good, a string of serious incidents raise some fundamental questions that must be addressed if its workers in Norway and abroad are to remain confident they will come home safely every day.

Statoil last week released reports on two accidents that could easily have proven fatal. In the case of a well-control incident at the Troll field on 15 October, a last-minute change to the drilling plan caused gas to flow freely from the well until a fast-thinking driller shut it down.
