The US supermajor said it was awarded a new offshore prospecting licence in the Gulf of Papua, and a company spokesperson confirmed the permit was PPL 569 in average water depths exceeding 1500 metres.

ExxonMobil owns 100% of the permit, and said its initial scope of work would include seismic acquisition.

PPL 569 is 150 kilometres to 200 kilometres off the south coast, and lies along the southern border of ExxonMobil’s two existing offshore permits — PPL 374 and PPL 375.
