No fewer than five private companies performing hydraulic fracturing and mining sand used in the process announced plans for initial public offerings on exchanges in the US and Canada to capitalise on a dramatic upswing in the fracking market and fund growth.

Fracturing giant FTS International filed documents with the US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) to sell up to $100 million in shares — although that figure could change — in what represents the largest of the offerings.
