The US operator agreed to pay $3 million to secure the rights to Block WA-526-P off Western Australia for six years.
Unlike all other Australian offshore exploration blocks, there is no specific work programme, but the permit cannot be renewed after the six-year period.
The cash-bid auction for the three blocks on offer was held on 2 February 2017, but Chevron was the only bidder, said the government.
