For most vessels, getting stuck in polar ice can spell disaster. But for a German research ship, spending a whole year ice-bound and at the mercy of drifting polar ice caps is precisely the goal.

An internationally-backed project will deploy the vessel Polarstern in the Arctic in 2019 with the intention of deliberately embedding it in the sea-ice so that it drifts over the North Pole, gathering information on the effects of climate change in the region.
