Gazprom’s proposal was met with enthusiasm from the European Commission, which said it will help to better integrate regional gas markets, address competition concerns and provide a forward-looking solution in line with EU rules.
The EC started an antitrust investigation against Gazprom in September 2011, but had yet to impose fines on the Russian giant, which provided 34% of European gas demand last year.
