The Indian nationals were abducted by forces in the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – In Opposition (SPLM-IO), loyal to exiled former vice president Riek Machar.
South Sudan’s Minister of Information, Michael Makuei, said the rebels were demanding the ransom be paid by the government or the oil company employing the Indians, which he named as Dar Petroleum.
“The government of South Sudan will not pay the ransom,” said Makuei, calling for the unconditional release of the hostages.
