The pipeline’s owner, Hilcorp, was unable to spot any gas bubbling from the leak during near-daily flights from 1 March until 13 March because of ice covering the affected area, according to the most recent situation report from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
The ice has also prevented divers from accessing the pipeline and making repairs.
The leak was discovered on 7 February, but federal authorities said the pipeline likely began releasing gas in December.
