Plugging gaps in the shallows

Angola's shallow waters are a relatively mature play and the project scene is dominated by activity such as enhanced oil recovery, infill and development drilling, step-out exploration and reducing gas flaring,
A number of small projects are ongoing in blocks south of the Congo estuary but it is ChevronTexaco's block 0 off Cabinda that is the major hub of shallow-water activity and will remain so after the US major was granted a much sought-after licence extension this year.

In 2003, average production in Block 0 divided into Areas A, B and C was 407,500 barrels of liquids per day with area A providing 262,000 bpd of oil and 2500 bpd of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) from 16 fields. Area B includes three fields that produced 118,000 bpd, while Area C output averaged 25,000 bpd from two fields.

Development activity in Area C is focused on the combined $1.9 billion Sanha condensate gas utilisation scheme and the Bomboco oil project.

When operational, this development is expected to eliminate 50% of associated gas flaring in block 0 and is forecast to have maximum daily production exceeding 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2006.

LPG will be exported via the world's largest LPG floating production, storage and offloading vessel. In addition, the adjacent Bomboco development will be tied into the Sanha infrastructure.

In Area A, development of the Banzala field is continuing with Banzala A in production and Banzala B in its front-end engineering and design phase.

Other projects undergoing FEED studies include the Greater Takula infrastructure scheme, which involves the renewal and debottlenecking of four offshore platforms and onshore treatment facilities to increase production and water treatment capacity.

Also, the Area A gas management project aims to eliminate the remaining associated gas flares by collecting and reinjecting excess natural gas.

Elsewhere, feasibility studies are being undertaken on the proposed Banzala C and Mafumeira projects and on the Nemba enhanced recovery scheme, while other small discoveries are being evaluated for commerciality.
