Industry 'may launch Arctic oil spill test'

Testing the waters: Controlled spill in Barents Sea yielded "many useful insights", says Shell Arctic advisor

A new Artic exploration industry group could launch a test oil spill as part of research on how to mitigate the effects of a potential accident, its head has revealed.

BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Eni, ExxonMobil, Shell, Statoil, North Caspian Oil Company and Total are all part of the research group launched late last month known as the Arctic Oil Spill Response Technology Joint Industry Programme.

The group is an initiative of the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (OGP), whose Arctic Co-ordination Task Force (ACTF) is chaired by Robert Blaauw, Shell’s senior advisor on the Arctic.

Speaking at International Petroleum Week in London, Blaauw acknowledged finding a suitable location for such a test may prove difficult.
