Central role: Russian President Vladimir Putin takes up his seat in front of a new-look government Cabinet in Moscow

RUSSIA has witnessed the first serious government shake-up since President Vladimir Putin initiallt came to power in 2000, with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev getting the approval of the president to oust key ministers and nominate his own candidates.

Nominations are expected to affect the Russian oil and gas industry as Aleksandr Novak replaced outgoing energy minister Sergei Shmatko, while Sergei Donskoy took the post of Natural Resources Minister, previously held by Yuri Trutnev.

Novak has both a business and administrative background, most recently working in the finance ministry, while Donskoy graduated from the Gubkin Oil Institute in Moscow and worked for state-owned oil producer Zarubezhneft, the Natural Resources Ministry and Rosgeologiya.
