Angostura's oil gets pumping

Australia's BHP Billiton has produced first oil from the Angostura field in Trinidad & Tobago, writes Mark Hillier.
Oil production from the field began on 9 January, having been preceded by first gas production on 16 December. The new facility was commissioned just 40 months after the discovery of crude oil at the Kairi-1 exploration well in 2001.

Start-up from Angostura represents the first oil production from the northeast coast of Trinidad. Initial oil production is expected to be around 60,000 barrels of oil per day, while the bulk of the produced gas is being re-injected to support oil production.

BHP added that Angostura's significant gas reserves will be commercialised in a second phase of development.

BHP holds a 45% stake and operates Angostura, with France's Total on 30% and Canada's Talisman Energy on 25%.

The Angostura production infrastructure includes a central processing platform with three satellite wellhead protector platforms. A pipeline connects the CPP to newly constructed storage facilities at Guayaguayare, where an export pipeline has been installed to allow for offloading to tankers in Guayaguayare Bay.

The offshore production facilities are located 38.5 kilometres off the east coast of Trinidad and in 40 metres of water.

BHP this year plans fresh exploration drilling both on block 3a next to the acreage where Angostura is located on on block 2c retention acreage to the south.
