Ecuador potential is being hampered

ECUADOR heads to the polls on 17 February without any of the fears about massive political upheaval, never mind social violence, that has historically accompanied presidential elections in Latin America.

The sense of calm is largely attributable to this latest contest being considered a one horse race — victory seems a formality for Rafael Correa, who has used a clever mixture of populism and pragmatism to keep himself comfortably in power as president for the last six years.

However, it is not a record that any international audience would necessarily celebrate. The anti-American rhetoric has on occasions matched that of his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez, and Correa is the man who has confounded Swedish justice by giving house room in his London…
