Delta deity devotion

Oil communities in Nigeria’s Niger Delta are making sacrifices to the gods and displaced ancestors in a bid to reclaim land lost after decades of oil production.

Residents were warned 15 years ago of an impending ecological disaster in the creeks as the substrata were bound to collapse at an ever faster rate as oil extraction continued unabated.

Now some communities, led by ruling People’s Democratic Party activist Omolubi Newuwumi, are resorting to spiritual action to find succour.
