The BBC commissions a lot of television programmes, but has it ever commissioned one about decommissioning?

Well, it has now. On Sunday, the series Engineering Giants gave UK viewers an entertaining but informative insight into what it takes to remove a North Sea gas platform.

The series is presented by engineer-turned-comedian Tom Wrigglesworth and Rob Bell, whom the BBC interestingly called a “rising star of mechanical engineering”.

The episode - called Gas Rig Strip Down - told the story of the $1.5 billion, nine-month removal of Shell’s Inde Lima platform in the UK Southern North Sea.

With more and more North Sea platforms set to be decommissioned in the years…
