According to Michel Contie, Total's head of north-west Europe activities, the company drilled 40 exploration and appraisal wells between 2004 and 2008, finding close to 400 million barrels of proven and probable oil equivalent reserves.
“We have more or less replaced production over the last four years,”he says.
One of the major finds was Jura, which contains 170 million barrels of oil equivalent and was brought on stream this summer as a subsea satellite to Total's Alwyn complex, one of the oil company's two UK hubs.
