Chevron aims to unlock the ultra-deep

CHEVRON is stepping up its quest to unlock the emerging US ultra-deep gas play — in a big way.

The US supermajor has hired one of the largest land rigs in the US to drill the emerging play, and has brought in deep gas specialist McMoran ­Exploration as a partner.

Chevron spudded the closely-watched Lineham Creek well on 31 December, targeting Eocene and Paleocene (Lower Tertiary) reservoirs below the salt weld at about 29,000 feet.

If the well hits and is brought on stream, it will be the deepest producing well in Louisiana.

The deep gas play concept spans both shallow water and onshore, targeting some of the same Wilcox and Lower Tertiary…
