Waste-to-Resource plan paints area green

There are many words used to describe Canada’s oil sands region, but “green” has not been one of them — until now.

Green will be the new colour of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), home to Canada’s lucrative Athabasca oil sands, once the local authority finishes rolling out its latest initiative to create a zero waste community with its planned Waste-to-Resource (WTR) development plan.

The oil sands have proven to be one of the industry’s most controversial resources, sparking international debate over its tailings ponds, greenhouse gas emissions, and open-pit mines.

At the centre of it all has been Fort McMurray, the urban centre at the heart of the region.
