Shale claims its place on Australian horizon

Standing its ground: Beach Energy already has a position in the Cooper basin

SHALE gas is on everyone’s lips in Australia, with local explorers talking up the resource potential of their acreage, state governments eyeing up potential economic benefits, and local media heralding the start of “a new wave of gas supply”.

However, commentators and major oil and gas companies are quick to point out that Australia will not replicate the success of the US any time soon.

Australia certainly has shale potential, but it does not have certain crucial factors that have made the US the shale kingpin.

Three of those factors are rig and services availability, large hydrocarbon markets and an extensive pipeline network, according to BHP Billiton.

The basins being targeted for shale are in remote parts of north-western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland, and the “Red Centre” in central Australia.
