Operator aiming to store associated gas and cut flaring

A REGIONAL subsidiary of the Russian-British oil company TNK-BP, Verkhnechonskneftegaz, has opted to proceed with a project to reduce the flaring of associated gas by pumping it into an underground reservoir for storage, according to company officials.

Verkhnechonskneftegaz is developing the Upper Chonskoye oilfield in East Siberia. The field produces low-sulphur, high-quality oil with almost no water content. However, the operator has met with an unexpectedly high gas output during the production of oil.

Verkhnechonskneftegaz oil production director Sergei Bragin says the operator is planning to drill between nine and 10 injection wells into a selected underground horizon at a depth of about 900 metres. In this storage area, gas will be accumulated for future use.
