Coral Sea focus: Julian Fowles, Oil Search’s executive general manager for exploration

Papua New Guinea’s summer is about to get even hotter with the semi-submersible drilling rig Stena Clyde sailing in for a much-anticipated multi-well explor­ation campaign in the balmy waters of the Coral Sea west of the capital city Port Moresby.

Oil Search, the country’s largest producer and operator of all Papua New Guinea’s producing fields, is leading the exploration programme on behalf of various joint venture partners.

Oil Search hired the Stena Clyde for a four-well campaign comprising two firm and two optional wells beginning in early 2013.

Its ambition is to find a material gas resource that can support a standalone liquefied natural gas project or, at the very least, provide feedstock for an existing LNG development.

It will be the first bout of offshore drilling in Papua New Guinea for decades.
