US NATURAL gas prices have staged a surprising rally over the last couple of weeks as traders have responded to announcements from operators that they will curb natural gas drilling in the coming year and are shutting in some production as well.

US front-month futures rose to $2.46 per million British thermal units as Upstrean went to press, the highest value seen since early March and more than 20% above the trading levels that were seen in mid-April.

“This rally really started a couple of weeks ago with the colder weather in the north east,” PFGBest analyst Phil Flynn said.
