Looking beyond the numbers

LAURIE Hunter, chief executive of AIM-listed Madagascar Oil is not a man to waste words. He dislikes pomposity and speaks as he thinks, deliberately and with the demeanour of someone who has thought through the chess play.

This is just as well. For Hunter has been busy these last few years defending his company against ill-grounded financial aspersions cast by competitors, as well as dousing market fears ahead of this month’s lifting of force majeure on three conventional oil blocks in Madagascar.

Famed for pioneering a unique heavy oil development in the arid central interior, amid the worst political crisis the country has known, Hunter has been doing what he does best — patiently explaining the terrain to assuage market jitters, and so build investor confidence.
