Representatives of Oil Spill Response Ltd (OSRL), a non-profit entity funded by about 160 energy sector companies, unveiled a capping stack at the base that is designed to shut-in an uncontrolled subsea well. The capping stack weighs 140 tonnes, cost about $40 million and was developed through the Subsea Well Response Project (SWRP).

The joint initiative was launched in 2011 by BG Group, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Petrobras, Shell, Statoil and Total, and is intended to enhance international capability to respond to a subsea well-control incident, starting out from the principle of prevention.
